High school electronic pitch-calling rules

Under NFHS Rules 1-6-2 and 3-2-5, a coach may use a one-way electronic device from the dugout to the catcher for calling pitches while the team is on defense. The coach must remain in the dugout or bench area.

• Recipient: the catcher—not the pitcher or other fielders.
• Game situation: the team must be on defense.
• Purpose: calling pitches.
• Sender location: inside the dugout or bench area.
• Device capability: one-way only. A device capable of two-way communication is not made legal merely by muting its return channel.

The 2026 NFHS changes clarify that players may not wear equipment to record or transmit audio or video. That is separate from the permitted one-way pitch-call device and is another reason to keep the game setup narrow and intentional.

NFHS lists a team warning for an initial player-communication equipment violation, with the next offender and head coach subject to ejection. Review the current rule book and interpretations for the full penalty language.

UIL announced the NFHS one-way rule for Texas high school baseball: coach in the dugout to catcher on defense for pitch calling. Other state associations can adopt, modify, or supplement NFHS rules.

Travel tournaments, showcases, and private leagues may use a different rule set even when the teams are high-school age. Ask the event director which written rules control before relying on a season-long assumption.
