Apple Watch Setup
Set up your team’s Apple Watches
Prepare a set of team-owned watches before installing Seam. Keep personal data off the watches, complete Apple’s one-time setup, and get every wrist ready for Team Mode.
6 minute setup guide
The short version
Don't use your personal Apple Account—it can copy your messages, photos, and contacts onto the watches. Family Setup also does not scale well for a full team and requires cellular watch models.
The clean approach is a dedicated team Apple Account plus a one-time setup for each watch. Once Seam is installed, the setup phone is not needed during games.
Why every watch needs initial setup
Apple requires every Apple Watch to be paired with an iPhone once to complete its initial setup. Three things commonly slow teams down:
- A personal Apple Account can sync private messages, photos, contacts, and other data to team watches.
- Apple Family Setup requires GPS + Cellular models and is limited by Apple Family size, so it is not designed for a full roster.
- Each watch needs a clean account identity before it can be handed to a player.
This is a one-time Apple setup step. Seam itself installs directly from the App Store on each watch and connects to the coach's iPhone during Team Mode.
Recommended setup
- 1
Create a dedicated team Apple Account
Create a new, free Apple Account used only for the team's watches, such asyourteam.watches@icloud.com. Keep personal accounts off team-owned watches. - 2
Pair each watch to an iPhone once
Open the iPhone Watch app, choose Add Watch, and set it up as your own watch—not Family Setup. Sign in with the team Apple Account, skip photo, contact, and health-data syncing, then choose a simple passcode or none. - 3
Repeat for the rest of the team
One iPhone can manage multiple watches. If setup becomes unreliable, use spare or older iPhones to prepare watches in batches. Those phones are only needed for Apple's initial setup. - 4
Install Seam directly on every watch
On the Apple Watch, open App Store, search Seam, and tap Get. Seam is an independent watch app, so no iPhone-side Seam installation is required for the player watches. - 5
Open Seam and test Team Mode
Open Seam on each watch and confirm it shows the Player Watch screen. Then use the coach's iPhone to test a few watches in Team Mode before game day.
Getting ready for a tournament
- Prepare as many watches as you can reliably complete and test those first.
- Start with two or three watches, run a practice inning, and confirm every call broadcasts.
- Give yourself time before the event. Apple's initial pairing is the slow part, but it only happens once.
Before you finish
- Created a dedicated team Apple Account—not a personal account
- Paired each watch once and skipped personal data syncing
- Installed the free Seam app directly on each Apple Watch
- Confirmed every watch opens to the Player Watch screen
- Tested a few watches with the coaching iPhone in Team Mode
